Welcome to Friday Reads. Each Friday, I’ll review any books I’ve completed that week, as well as share what I’m reading right now. And by “Each Friday,” I mean “some Fridays.”

Woo – progress! Next week, my February wrap-up.

No Matter the Wreckage – Sarah Kay & Sophia Janowitz – 4.5* (Feb 28)

Sometimes, poetry and I manage to connect and I don’t know who I am anymore. I connected so closely to certain phrases and entire poems.

This collection is presented in 9 parts, all loosely themed. Some sections left me completely cold. Others (2 and 5 especially) were so stunning that I almost gave the book a full 5*. I especially enjoyed “Montauk,” “Scissors,” and “Loose Threads.”

I’m not sure I’ve ever been this moved by a book of poetry. I may need an entire blog post to explore my thoughts.

Currently Reading:

The Alchemist – Paulo Coelho (20%)

The writing style reminds me of a parable. It’s kind of simplistic but a compelling story.

A Gentleman in Moscow – Amor Towles (7%)

My first DNF of 2019. I didn’t very far but I found myself choosing other activities rather than continuing so I moved on to something else.

Up Next:

Well-Read Black Girl – Glory Edim

A collection of essays by black women writers, my March short story/collection choice.
