Welcome to Friday Reads. Each Friday, I’ll review any books I’ve completed that week, as well as share what I’m reading right now. And by “Each Friday,” I mean “some Fridays.”
I wasn’t going to post since I just did my October wrap-up yesterday, but I have a lot of books to read between now and the end of the year so I might as well start. I was 5 books behind until yesterday, but now only 4.

The Corset – Laura Purcell – 4* (Nov 1)
I read another book by Purcell earlier in the year, The Silent Companions. It was super creepy gothic horror and I immediately looked for more books by this author. I was excited to see this book scheduled for an October release so I preordered it. And then Amazon canceled my preorder about 5 times. I eventually ordered it from Book Depository. I tore through this book in 24 hours, starting it on Halloween night. It’s a very good book, but it didn’t live up to the “horror” genre as I was expecting. The Silent Companions gave me actual goosebumps. This did not. The story of Ruth, a young prisoner awaiting trial for murder, is horrifying, but not for the reasons I was expecting. Abuse, death, mental torture, poverty… She tells her story to Dorothea, a do-gooder who visits Ruth and other prisoners as part of some weird “good deeds” campaign inspired by her dead mother. In many ways, Purcell’s storytelling is richer in this book than the other so I still enjoyed it. But it wasn’t the level of paranormal horror I was expecting so I’m slightly disappointed. |
