Welcome to Friday Reads. Each Friday, I’ll review any books I’ve completed that week, as well as share what I’m reading right now. And by “Each Friday,” I mean “some Fridays.”

I briefly caught up with my reading goal, only to discover today that I’m behind again. Boo!

Finished reading:

Behind Closed Doors – BA Paris – 3.5* (May 17)

This book was a very fast read. I kept going, amazed at the ways in which the antagonist kept a step ahead of the protagonist.

There were a couple of big holes in this book. Namely, I didn’t understand the antagonist’s end game. I got what he was doing but not why. Also, I felt there were some holes in the conclusion based on earlier scenes. (Yes, I know that’s vague but I’m trying to avoid spoilers. If you want the specifics, read my Goodreads review. I don’t go in-depth, but it’s more spelled out.)

womanInTheWindow The Woman in the Window – AJ Finn

I couldn’t make it past the first 6%. I like it when an author doesn’t give all of the information about the protagonist at the start, but this was so cagey that I really didn’t care about her. Nothing seemed to be happening so I gave up for now.

Currently reading:

Blues for a Black Cat and Other Stories – Boris Vian – 29%I bought this short story collection in Paris on our last trip. I’m 99% sure this was translated from French. It’s… ok. I just read the title story and that black cat was a jerk. My black cat (pictured here with the book) is NOT a jerk.
Today Will Be Different – Maria Semple – 35%

I loved Semple’s “Where’d You Go, Bernadette?” so I’ve been looking forward to this book. And I want to love it, partly for that reason and partly because I completely overpaid for it in an effort to support our local independent bookstore. But so far, I’m finding the protagonist (Eleanor) a little hard to like.

Both of those books are short so I’m hoping I can finish them soon and have my reading goal back on-track.
