Welcome to Friday Reads. Each Friday, I’ll review any books I’ve completed that week, as well as share what I’m reading right now.

And by “Each Friday,” I mean “some Fridays.”

Better late than never, right?

Finished reading:

Truly Devious – Maureen Johnson – 4* (Mar 5)

This delightful mystery takes place in the perfect setting – a remote boarding school with a dark past.

Stevie Bell is there to find answers to the questions surrounding the death of the founder’s family 80 years ago but somehow finds herself in the middle of current-day drama as well. The characters are all distinctive and I had no problems keeping everyone straight in my mind. I also like how casual the inclusiveness of minorities feels.

In typical Maureen Johnson fashion, the book ends on a major cliffhanger, leaving the reader waiting for the next installment. I knew going in that this was a series (I believe a trilogy) so I wasn’t surprised. That didn’t make it any less frustrating though!

Every Day – David Levithan – 5* (Mar 6)

I read this book in one day. It was entirely engaging and I couldn’t wait to see who A woke up as next. At first, I disliked Rhiannon (the girl A kept going back to visit) because she so often got hung up on his appearance, whether A was a girl or just unattractive. It never seemed to be an issue if A was a hot guy. But I realized that’s probably realistic – how would I react in that situation? It’s a lot to adjust to when the person you’re trying to have a relationship with looks completely different every day.

The story isn’t without its flaws, but I still give it 5 stars because it’s the first book in awhile that I’ve read that quickly and spent so much time thinking about after I was done.

Currently reading:

Vacationland: True Stories from Painful Beaches – John Hodgman – 7%

I’m not very far into this book, but so far it seems true to what I know about John Hodgman. I’ve listened to his podcast so much that I can almost hear him reading it to me.

Next up: (This is largely decided by the library – I’ve waitlisted a bunch of books so as they come available, I have to read them before they expire.)

I don’t want to jinx it, but it seems the library has quit smothering me in books. I may get to read something from my own shelves!
