Welcome to Friday Reads. Each Friday, I’ll review any books I’ve completed that week, as well as share what I’m reading right now. And by “Each Friday,” I mean “some Fridays.”
Here we are again. Thanks to a power outage, I had a couple of unplanned hours to read.
|The Great Alone – Kristin Hannah – 4.5* (July 17)
I really enjoyed this story about a family homesteading in Alaska. Their personal issues complicated what was already going to be a hard time given the living conditions, and I liked how the personal vs physical fed each other. The land was as much a character as any of the people.
By the end, I had grown a bit weary of how many horrible things were happening. How much must one character endure? Even when something positive would happen or there was a reason to be optimistic, I always dreaded the inevitable dashing of hope and happiness. The ending wasn’t as satisfying as I would’ve liked, though I really don’t know what would’ve felt right.
|Blues for a Black Cat and Other Stories – Boris Vian – 48%
Still no progress here. Meh.
Something on my Kindle because I’ll be traveling.
