Goodbye, 2025. You were not my favorite. It would be lovely if 2026 could be better.

Reading in 2025

Here are my goals and accomplishments:

1. Read 36 books

I reached my goal in October and ended the year with 46 books. That’s 5 more books than 2024, so I’m pleased with that. Goodreads made a summary page of my reading challenge, and I regularly add my books to a Highlight on Instagram (if December isn’t there yet, it should be soon).

I also started using Storygraph this year, and while their numbers often differ slightly from Goodreads, I like their charts.

2. Decrease my TBR

I started with 58 unread physical books and 20 unread Kindle books. On December 31, I had 58 unread physical books and 20 unread Kindle books. I think. I still have discrepancies between Goodreads and Storygraph on this. I know I read a couple of physical books this year, and I also added a few to my collection, including a Christmas gift.

Spoiler alert: I’m not setting this as a goal for 2026, so I’m not going to bother sorting it out. I’ve had this goal for years and it’s rarely made much difference in what/how I read, but it’s served a greater purpose of making me more mindful of my book purchases.

3. Read 25 minutes per day

Once again, this goal is the only reason I ever hit the other goals. December 31 was Day 1568.

Despite having some months with no listening at all, I’m only 14 minutes behind my listening for 2024. I’m also about 7.5 hours into an audiobook that I should’ve DNF’d months ago, but I’m 64% in, so I might end up finishing it eventually.

2026 Plans:

1. Read 36 books

I’ve set the same goal for the past few years, and it seems to serve me well. It’s achievable if I read consistently, and that’s what’s most important to me.

2. Read 25 minutes per day

I usually add a minute to this goal each year, so it sho

uld be 26 minutes for 2026. But 25 is such a nice number. It works well with my focus app and it’s also a standard unit for the Pomodoro Method of working, so I’m keeping this goal steady at 25 minutes/day.

This isn’t really a goal, but I’m going to give some thought to how I’m tracking and reporting. This is really just for me, and I’ve made data collection for a leisure activity more difficult than it needs to be.

As always, you can find me elsewhere to see what I’m reading:
