Poe-tober wasn’t as jam-packed with creepy media and events as I would’ve liked (unless you count the horror story taking place across the river in DC), but I still want to report on my efforts.

Books:

  • Frankenstein (Mary Shelley) – 2*
  • Haunting of Hill House (Shirley Jackson) – 5*
  • 25 Icelandic Ghost Stories (Jón R. Hjálmarsson) – 2*

My revisit to Haunting of Hill House was by far the best. The other two were an awful slog and slowed me down a lot.

Movies:

  • Hocus Pocus (1993) – 3.5*
  • The Woman in Black (2012) – 2*
  • The Changeling (2008) – 3.5*
  • Sixth Sense (1999) – 4*
  • Rope (1948) – 4.5*
  • I Confess (1953) – 2*

I’ve watched Sixth Sense and Rope before and enjoyed watching both again. The version of The Changeling that we watched wasn’t an updated version of the classic horror film, but it was interesting. I Confess is a Hitchcock film but it wasn’t scary. And The Woman in Black was scary but also horribly confusing and disappointing.

TV:

  • Halloween Baking Championship
  • Halloween Wars
  • Haunted Gingerbread Showdown

Poe-tober isn’t only about fear. I adore holiday-themed competition shows.

Events:

We found Jackson’s Pumpkin Farm last year and decided to return this year with my sister and her kids. The weather was beautiful and all 3 kids (and 5 adults) had a good time with a wide variety of displays, games, activities, and foods.

We haven’t been to Lee-Fendall House before even though it’s only a few blocks away, but the Grief and Ghosts tour was great. I look forward to returning during the day.

Tall Ship Providence is a new attraction in Old Town. They performed brief tellings of ghost stories one weekend and it was a nice introduction to what they’ll be doing in the future.

Little Theater of Alexandria is another local attraction we hadn’t visited before. I’ve been looking for an opportunity so when I saw they were staging Haunting of Hill House, I jumped on the opportunity to buy tickets for Halloween. It was a dark and stormy night (we were caught in a heavy storm on the way back) but it was the perfect way to close out the month. The set was beautifully done and the actors were quite talented. Impressive!
